Why AI

AI is everywhere.

It writes our emails before we’ve thought of them. It finishes our sentences, labels our files, answers our questions, and tells us what we might have meant. It’s embedded into every tool, every app, every workflow. Or at least, that’s the claim.

But here’s the truth. AI is everywhere. And it’s nowhere.

Because what we’re calling AI today… isn’t.

What we’re using, and what’s powering most of the so-called intelligence around us, are trained decision engines. They’ve seen enough examples to know what probably comes next. They don’t think. They don’t understand. They don’t change themselves. They optimise for the next best guess.

That’s not artificial intelligence. It’s sophisticated autocomplete. It’s statistical modelling dressed in friendly UX. It’s helpful. Sometimes brilliant. But it’s not thinking.

And we’re not saying that’s a bad thing. We don’t need to be afraid of the term AI or reject tools just because they carry the label. What matters is whether we understand what’s actually happening behind the scenes. Is this tool predicting? Automating? Replacing? Augmenting? We need to know what it is and what it isn’t.

At LDS, we work with tools that do this kind of thing all the time. We use NeuralProphet to forecast load. Not solar generation. Just demand. It’s good. Really good. It can tell us, with a fair amount of accuracy, how many kilowatts the house will pull at 4pm on a Tuesday in October. It uses temperature, usage patterns, and historical behaviour.

But is it intelligent?

No. It’s a model. It doesn’t know it’s forecasting. It doesn’t learn unless we retrain it. It doesn’t reason. It doesn’t care why the load changed. It only knows it’s seen something similar before.

The same applies to most of what’s branded as AI today. Whether it’s writing text, suggesting workflows, or surfacing insights, it’s working from a dataset. Not from understanding.

And that’s fine, as long as we know what we’re working with.

Because this kind of automation, when used well, is incredibly powerful. It helps us scale. Reduce effort. Improve timing. Reduce emissions. It lets us do more with less. Not by pretending it’s thinking. But by accepting that it doesn’t need to.

But here’s the warning.

AI doesn’t fix your mistakes. It multiplies them.

It learns from the data it’s given. And if that data is flawed, biased, or incomplete, the model will be too. Your assumptions become its truth. Your errors become its guidance. And suddenly, your future is being shaped by your past. Warts and all.

So before you jump into the world of AI, make sure your data is ready for it. Make sure your systems are clean, your inputs make sense, and your blind spots are understood.

Because no matter how smart the tool, you can’t build intelligence on noise. It’s like building a house on sand. Looks fine from a distance. But the moment pressure hits, things sink.

And then comes the harder truth. You may have spent thousands on a shiny new AI product. It looks clever. It demoed well. It ticked the innovation box. But if it didn’t reduce your costs, improve your quality, or move the business forward in any meaningful way… what exactly did it do?

Before you invest, ask what you actually want out of it.

Are you trying to reduce operational costs? Improve service quality? Lower your carbon footprint? Speed up a process? Eliminate waste?

If you can’t answer that, you’re not ready for AI. Because technology is not the strategy. It’s the tool.
